Diamonds grown in a lab
It all started with a seed. The seed is a tiny, lab-grown diamond, processed by one of two processes: CVD (chemical vapor deposition) or HPHT (high temperature and pressure). Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) is a process in which seeds are deposited into a plasma reactor chamber and a carbon-rich gas mixture is added to it at very low pressure. Microwaves are then used to heat the gas and generate plasma. As temperatures climb a few thousand degrees Celsius, the gas molecules break down, allowing the carbon atoms to bond to the seeds one layer at a time.
The High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) method imitates the formation process of natural diamonds by placing seeds under huge mechanical Pressure to exert huge Pressure and High Temperature on ready-made carbon. The seed will take the carbon lattice and quickly turn into a diamond, growing layer by layer over several days until it reaches the desired carat weight.
